Open access rail operator Lumo has officially launched its new West Coast rail service, providing a new direct connection between London and Stirling while delivering greater choice, lower fares and improved connectivity for communities across the route.
The launch of the new service has also created around 100 new jobs, marking a significant milestone as Lumo continues to expand its footprint across the UK rail network.
With fares starting from just £29.90 between London Euston and Stirling, the new service is designed to offer customers a more affordable way to travel while encouraging greater use of rail as a sustainable alternative to both road and air travel. Additional fares include journeys from London to Preston from £23.90 and Preston to Stirling from £14.90.
The route will connect London Euston, Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds, Larbert and Stirling, significantly improving connectivity for communities along the West Coast corridor. Notably, Whifflet and Greenfaulds will benefit from their first-ever direct rail services to London, creating new economic and travel opportunities for local communities.
Matt McGrandles, Chair of Ceangail CIC and Stirling Highland Games President said, “The launch of Lumo’s new direct service between London and Stirling is a hugely positive development for our city and for Scotland as a whole. By providing an affordable, sustainable and convenient rail connection to the UK’s capital, this service opens the door for more visitors, businesses and investors to discover everything Stirling has to offer.
As Scotland’s historic heart, Stirling is uniquely placed to benefit from improved connectivity, and I welcome Lumo’s commitment to strengthening links between our communities and the rest of the UK.
However, while this is a fantastic start, it must also act as a catalyst for wider investment in Stirling’s infrastructure. If we are serious about growing tourism and attracting more visitors, we need to ensure that our transport networks, visitor facilities and wider infrastructure can meet future demand. By matching improved rail connectivity with local investment, we can maximise the economic benefits of opportunities such as this and create a better experience for both residents and visitors alike.”
Passengers will travel on Lumo’s distinctive blue trains, featuring refreshed interiors and the operator’s signature single-class, low-cost service model, designed to combine simplicity, affordability and a high-quality customer experience.
Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, added: “It’s very exciting to be launching a pioneering new service for the West Coast. Customers can enjoy simple, low-cost fares with an excellent experience on our services between Scotland, the Northwest of England and London, and I’m very proud that we’re already forging some meaningful connections in the communities on the route.”
Lumo has built a strong reputation as one of the UK’s highest-performing rail operators, recognised for industry-leading customer satisfaction, reliability and a commitment to creating meaningful community partnerships that deliver positive social impact.
The operator already successfully serves the East Coast Main Line, connecting Glasgow, Falkirk and Edinburgh with Newcastle and London, and the launch of the new West Coast route represents a major step forward in expanding affordable long-distance rail travel while strengthening connections between Scotland, the Northwest of England and the capital.
The new service reinforces Lumo’s ambition to make rail travel more accessible, affordable and sustainable for communities across the UK.
